The Soquel High boys basketball team advanced to the second round of the CIF Northern California Division IV tournament by defeating Colfax 63-53 on Wednesday night at Soquel High.
The Knights powered ahead early but stalled in the second quarter as Colfax, a San Joaquin Section semifinalist, roared back by holding the home team to four second-quarter points.
Colfax led 28-25 at half.
Soquel took a one-point lead into the fourth quarter and kept the Falcons from Placer County at bay.
With the win, Soquel will play host to another North State team, Orland, on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Division IV tournament.
Orland, the No. 12 seed, upset No. 5 seed Summerville 67-62.
• Sir Francis Drake 71, Santa Cruz 50: At San Anselmo, the Cardinals’ first Northern California tournament appearance ended in a loss, as they fell to the Pirates.
Drake kept its flawless 2012-13 record at home going with the win while avoiding its first losing streak since the first two games of the season.
Santa Cruz ends its season 19-12.
• Pacific Collegiate 71, Durham 52: At Durham, the Pumas made the about-4-hour trip north to Butte County and got a win against the Trojans in the first round of the CIF Northern California Division V tournament.
Pacific Collegiate handed Durham, the Northern Section champions, its first loss since Jan. 5, ending a streak of 16 wins in a row.
With the win, Pacific Collegiate will travel to Dublin to face Valley Christian at 7 p.m. Saturday. Valley Christian was one of three teams to receive a first-round bye. For the complete article see the 03-07-2013 issue.
