SANTA CRUZ Soquel High's girls and boys basketball teams won the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League tournament championship finals on Saturday night, exciting the crowd with overtime finishes in their games.

The Lady Knights made one of the most improbable rallies in the county this season, coming back from a 21-point deficit to force overtime and prevail 53-50 over Scotts Valley in the girls championship game.

It went to overtime in part because Tyler Stewart hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to the roar of the crowd that packed Kaiser Permanente Arena.

In the extra session, Ali Walters had two big putbacks to keep the Knights ahead and keep the stunned Falcons at bay.

After being denied the past two years in the tournament final, the third time ended up being the charm.

The boys team got a three-pointer in the corner from Tucker Wiget with 36 seconds to go in overtime, and the Knights survived a frantic bid by Santa Cruz in the closing moments to win 54-53.

The normally reserved Wiget punched the air and yelled as the ball swished the hoop.

It's the fourth time this season Soquel has beaten Santa Cruz.

The season is not over just yet for either team. They will enter the Central Coast Section tournament, scheduled to begin next week. They'll know their seeding on Sunday morning.
