SANTA CRUZ — The Cardinals gathered at midfield, all smiles, knowing that they will get one more game and a spot in the Central Coast Section Division III tournament.

Their rivals will have to wait.

Santa Cruz High’s boys soccer team got a goal in the 57th minute and defeated Soquel 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon in Depot Park.

With the win, the Cardinals finished in second in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League. Only two teams from the league are guaranteed a spot in the postseason tournament (the other went to league champion Harbor).

Cassidy Caruso untied the game by getting the goal in the fateful 57th minute. Off a free kick from the right side, Caruso dipped to the left. The ball came right to him, and he shot it low and past the Soquel goalkeeper.

Caruso raced to the Santa Cruz sideline, where teammates awaited.

Following his coach’s instructions paid off, he said.

“I saw the ball coming, and my coach says not to visualize kicking the ball, but celebrating the goal,” Caruso said. “I kicked it in, and luckily it went in.”

It was the first goal allowed by Soquel in more than 460 minutes of gametime. The last team to score on the Knights was Santa Cruz back on Jan. 23.
