MVC, Wildcatz to play for girls title tonight

Posted: Thursday, Feb 14th, 2013

It all comes down to tonight for the Monte Vista Christian and Watsonville high school girls basketball teams.

Both teams will play at 7 p.m. in separate games in town with the Monterey Bay League Pacific Division championship on the line.

Each squad is 10-1 in the division. If both teams win or if both lose, they will share the title. If one wins and the other loses, then the winner is the outright champion.

Monte Vista Christian will face Alvarez in their final regular-season contest at home. The Mustangs come into the game having won their last nine in a row, a season best. They previously defeated Alvarez on Jan. 24 by 26 points.

Watsonville will face rival Pajaro Valley at home. The Wildcatz have won their last three, the latest a 51-36 win against North Monterey County on Tuesday in Castroville.

Sonya Cervantes scored 21 points, and Mandy Cabanlit had 11 points in the Wildcatz’s win. Samantha Flores put in 16 points for North Monterey County.

Monte Vista Christian is going for its fifth ever league or division championship and first since 1998.

Watsonville is going for its first league or division title since 2008.
