WATSONVILLE Ė The Aptos High girls basketball team saw its season come to an end at the hands of St. Francis Central Coast Catholic, 82-48 on Tuesday night in the first round of the SCCAL postseason tournament.
The Marinersí season was left to day-by-day status, as the teamís next loss was going to be its final of the 2012-13 season. Unfortunately for them, St. Francis needed about two minutes to get rolling. And the Sharks didnít stop.
With the win, St. Francis Central Coast Catholic faces Soquel on Wednesday evening in Scotts Valley in the semifinals of the SCCAL tournament. The winner heads to Saturdayís championship final at Kaiser Permanente Arena.
Aptosí Karianna Crowder scored both of Aptosí first two buckets, giving the Mariners a 4-1 lead.
St. Francis then went on a 19-0 run to barrel its way to a 20-4 advantage. Several players got in on the action.
Trailing 32-11 with 5:21 to go in the second quarter, Aptos went on a 7-0 spurt to give the team life, as it cut its deficit to 32-18. The Sharks answered back with a fast-break-laden 9-0 run to end the quarter. Lauren Price spotted up for a three-pointer and later had a fast-break layup, while Jessica Ward had a layup and a baseline jumper.
Crowder had 18 points to lead Aptos. Mariah Rojas put in 11 points.
Price led St. Francis with 18 points. Ward tallied 10 points.
