WATSONVILLE – The Sharks did not forget about last month’s 17-point loss to San Lorenzo Valley in Felton. Tuesday night was the chance to get back at the Cougars and take the all-important rubber match. They did just that.
The St. Francis Central Coast Catholic High boys basketball team used a swarming defense to beat San Lorenzo Valley 68-49 in the first round of the SCCAL postseason tournament.
With the win, the Sharks advance to the semifinal round, scheduled to take place Thursday at Scotts Valley against either Santa Cruz or Soquel.
The Sharks used a 12-0 run over the first four minutes of the second quarter to take a 30-8 advantage over the visiting Cougars. San Lorenzo Valley didn’t end its drought until 3:11 to go, when Billy Mullins raced to the hoop for a contested layup. That started an 8-0 run by San Lorenzo Valley to cut its deficit to 30-16.
St. Francis didn’t let San Lorenzo Valley get much closer, as it held a double-digit lead throughout the second half.
The senior duo of Aidan Mathews and Matt DeVogelaere delivered for St. Francis in what could be the team’s final home game of 2013 barring how the CCS tournament selection goes this weekend.
DeVogelaere put in 21 points on 7-for-12 shooting. He was 4-for-5 in the first quarter as the Sharks took an 18-8 lead after one quarter.
Mathews put in 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting. He made his first three shots of the game and rolled in the fourth quarter with nine points.
