SALINAS – Game No. 10 of the Wildcatz’s journey through the Monterey Bay League’s Pacific Division was about as smooth as a Brillo Pad.

The Watsonville High girls basketball team withstood everything Alvarez High threw at it and kept its championship hopes alive Thursday night with a 64-52 victory on Thursday night.

Alvarez’s kitchen-sink attack wore out in the fourth quarter, as the Wildcatz muscled on by with an 8-0 run in the opening 1:50 to give the squad a 56-41 lead. In the run, the Wildcatz got four free throws from Mandy Cabanlit – In one possession, she was fouled in the corner and sank three straight from the charity stripe – and Sonya Cervantes had four fast-break points.

Watsonville maintained its double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter.

With the win, the Wildcatz improved to 15-7 overall and 9-1 in the division. They enter the final week still in control of their own championship fate. If they can beat North Monterey County and then Pajaro Valley, they will win a share of the division.
