WATSONVILLE – Sonya Cervantes said she doesn’t mind being the hunted.

So far, she and the rest of the Watsonville High girls basketball players have responded well as other teams try to hunt down their first-place position. They passed another test as the top team in the Monterey Bay League’s Pacific Division, beating North Monterey County 53-25 on Tuesday night.

With the win, Watsonville improved to 5-0 in the division. More importantly for the girls in gold, they avoided what would have been a three-way tie, given that North Monterey County came into the contest only one game out of first place.

The Wildcatz never trailed and used a 9-0 run to end the first quarter and go ahead 14-5. They continued the momentum into the second quarter, going on a 9-2 run to extend the lead to 23-7.

From there, Watsonville’s defense held down North Monterey County, who had hopes of getting its first three-game winning streak since 2011.

Mandy Cabanlit scored 16 points. Cervantes had 10 points, and center Brianna Cueva had 13 points.

North Monterey County’s Cori Key put in eight points, all in the second half. Teammate Samantha Flores also had eight points.
