APTOS — The Aptos High girls soccer team took the first lead of the game, but it wasn’t able to come out with the win.

Harbor High’s free kick in the 70th minute was enough to prevent the Mariners from winning, as the two teams ended in a 1-1 tie at Trevin Dilfer Field.

In a tough 2012-13 campaign, it’s the fourth time in five games the Mariners have been held to only one goal. But they’ve been in those four contests, as three have ended in ties.

They took the first lead in the 64th minute thanks in part to Michaela Pesci. She raced down the field with the ball and nearly had a clean shot on goal, but a Harbor defender blocked it out, giving the Mariners a corner kick.

Stephanie Buecheler took the corner kick duties and lofted the ball high and parallel to the goal. Bailey Evers jumped above everyone else and headed the ball in to give Aptos a 1-0 lead.

Six minutes later, an Aptos player was called for a foul, giving the Pirates a free kick from about 50 yards away. Erin Woods teed up for the kick and sent it high toward the goal. It scorched by the crossbar and the hands of a leaping Aptos goalkeeper for the equalizer.

Both teams tried to get something going in the final 10 minutes, but nothing emerged on a chilly night.

The Mariners tried a give-and-go about 30 yards from the goal, but the ball went too fast. A minute later, Kaile West broke by a Harbor defender toward the goal, but her pass to a teammate was broken up.

Harbor spent the final few minutes with the ball trying to work the sideline, but no shot opportunities emerged.

The tie left Aptos at 2-4-4 overall and 1-1-2 in the Santa Cruz Coast
