WATSONVILLE — Forty-five yards from the goal, Taylor Slattery decided to go for it. In recent practices, she had made some wild shots from very far away. Why not make an attempt?

It worked.

Slattery booted the ball to the goal out of the reach of everyone on the field. The ball hit the crossbar and spiked downward onto the Watsonville goalkeeper’s back and past the line for a goal.

Her go-for-it goal a minute into the second half proved to be the difference as the Gilroy High girls soccer team defeated Watsonville 2-1 on a extremely cold Wednesday night at Emmett Geiser Field.

“I’ve shot a lot of those recently, and it just happened to go in,” Slattery said.

Gilroy is 1 for 1 so far in the Monterey Bay League’s Gabilan Division, the supposed stronger of the two divisions in the league.

The loss was Watsonville’s first since Dec. 6, snapping a streak of three consecutive ties. The black and gold squad is 0-1-1 in the division.

It was Watsonville that grabbed the first lead of the game. In the 31st minute, a Gilroy player was called for a foul, giving Watsonville a free kick from about 35 yards away. Dominique Chipres, who has given the Wildcatz several free kick goals, took a swing, and it worked. The ball went just high enough to where the Gilroy goalkeeper couldn’t reach it, and the Wildcatz celebrated a 1-0 advantage.

“Any free kick by Dominique is a dangerous kick,” said Watsonville coach Gladys Mondragon. “Those are her kicks.”
