SALINAS – In the first-ever meeting of the two teams, the Alisal High boys soccer team put in the lone goal in a 1-0 victory against Pajaro Valley on Tuesday night.

Both teams were fairly even throughout the Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division matchup, but a Willy Miranda goal off a pass from Lorenzo Vasquez in the 30th minute proved to be the difference.

The ball was on Alisal’s half of the field for most of the final 40 minutes, but the Grizzlies didn’t get too many chances for a shot on goal.

In the 52nd minute, the Grizzlies received a corner kick, but the ball was immediately cleared. Two Alisal players rushed down the left sideline toward the Pajaro Valley goal and took a shot, but their attempt was blocked.

Alisal had back-to-back corner kicks in the 73rd and 76th minute, but nothing materialized.

Pajaro Valley’s last good chance came in extra time. Alfonso Diaz raced down the middle of the field toward the goal, but his shot from about 35 yards away was blocked. The Grizzlies got a corner kick but, again, the ball was cleared by Alisal.

The Trojans raced down the field again in a 3-on-1 break, but their hopes of a dagger goal was broken up by Pajaro Valley’s goalkeeper.

The loss dropped Pajaro Valley to 5-2-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the division. Alisal remained unbeaten at 9-0-1 and 2-0 in the division.

Alisal remained the stingiest team of the seven in the division. This was the Trojans’ sixth shutout this season as they are plus-22 in goals after 10 games played.

For Pajaro Valley, it was their second consecutive result that was 1-0. The previous one went in their favor back on Dec. 22 at the Homestead Christmas Cup Bronze Division Finals.
