SANTA CRUZ — The Watsonville High boys basketball team used two second-half runs and took the lead late in the fourth quarter to beat Harbor High 54-46 on Friday in the second round of the Emmett Thompson Memorial Dad’s Club Tournament.

With the win, Watsonville will play in the consolation finals at 2:30 p.m. today at the Civic Auditorium.

The Wildcatz can thank their defense for getting them back in the contest.

Harbor’s Deane Rinaldi nailed a spot-up 3-pointer 10 seconds into the fourth quarter to give Harbor a 44-38 lead.

Watsonville didn’t allow Harbor to score for the next 6 minutes, 41 seconds.

In that time, Watsonville grinded out 12 points to grab the lead for good.

A put-back by Jason Paz with 3:10 to play gave the Wildcatz a 45-44 lead, their first lead of the day. Alex Chavez followed up with a 3 with 2:07 to play, and Ray Silver nailed two free throws 40 seconds after that.

“This showed that our patience and our effort paid off,” said Watsonville coach James Gomez.

It was a big shift from the first half, when Harbor’s players, which had about the same size and height as the Watsonville players, muscled their way to an early lead. Harbor never trailed in the first half and built up a 12-point lead at one point.

Harbor forced the action, while Watsonville was one-and-done on a lot of possessions in the first half.

The Pirates sank five of six free throws late in the first quarter to take an 18-9 lead. Watsonville closed out the quarter with a hard layup by Chavez and a 3 by Justin Carrancho to close the gap to 18-14.

Harbor didn’t miss to start the second quarter, going on a 7-0 run to push its lead to 25-14 with 6:21 to play in that quarter.
