SOQUEL The Soquel High girls soccer team scored in the opening moments, never trailed and held off a second-half surge by Watsonville to beat the Wildcatz 5-2 on Tuesday night.

Kendra Bonsall scored two goals for Soquel, including the first, which included a goal in the second minute that gave the Knights the momentum it needed to beat the defending Monterey Bay League champions.

After Watsonville tied it up on a goal from Dominique Chipres in the 11th minute, the Knights went back to work.

In the 20th minute, Annakin Cowell broke free on the left side, and her shot was deflected past the goal, giving Soquel a corner kick. The ensuing kick went right to Christina Foster in the middle, who fired it low past the Watsonville goalkeeper for a 2-1 Soquel lead.

Eight minutes later, Bonsall sprinted down the right sideline with the ball, made a cut toward the middle and fired the ball low past the goalkeeper, who came out in an attempt to stop the speeding Bonsall. The goalkeeper was injured on the play and replaced.

Soquel held momentum for the rest of the first half as Watsonville tried anything to get something going.
