The Santa Cruz Warriors basketball team cleared another hurdle Wednesday morning, getting approval from the NBA Development League to relocate from its previous home in Bismarck, N.D.

The Warriors are the former Dakota Wizards that resided in the Midwest for nearly two decades. The current Golden State Warriors ownership, led by Peter Guber and Joe Lacob, purchased the minor-league franchise with hopes of moving it west.

Santa Cruz will play its home games at the Kaiser Permanente Arena, which is being constructed at 140 Front St.

“We’re excited to bring the NBA D-League brand of basketball to Santa Cruz and Northern California,” NBA D-League President Dan Reed said in a statement. “The relocation of the team from Bismarck to Santa Cruz further demonstrates the Golden State Warriors’ commitment to developing top young NBA prospects in the NBA D-League. We thank the fans in Bismarck for their support of the team over the last six NBA D-League seasons.”

In addition to the approval by the league, the Warriors updated their website and also redirected the Dakota Wizards’ website there.

In its final season in Bismarck, the Wizards reached the D-League playoffs, getting ousted in two games by the Bakersfield Jam.

The team will host open tryouts 9 a.m. Sunday at Aptos High. About 20 athletes are expected to attend, with the Warriors’ coaching staff in attendance.

The Warriors play their first game Nov. 30 and first home game Dec. 23.
