SANTA CRUZ - With not much fanfare, construction began on an arena near downtown Tuesday morning that will be the future home of the Santa Cruz Warriors.
Semi-trucks and other demotion vehicles arrived at 140 Front St. about 8 a.m. and began tearing up the asphalt on the former parking lot.
Eventually, an about 30,000 square-foot arena, named Kaiser-Permanente Arena, will be built there. The Warriors are scheduled to play their first NBA Development League game in the arena Dec. 23.
Devcon Construction of Santa Cruz is performing the construction, which will take place daily.
Weekday construction is scheduled to take place from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Weekend construction is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
