The Santa Cruz Warriors and Santa Cruz City Council will meet tonight to advance another step in its plan to bring NBA Development League basketball to town.
The council will decide whether to give the OK to move forward with building an arena at 140 Front St., located in between the downtown and beach areas. In addition, the council will talk about allowing alcohol to be sold in the arena.
On Thursday, the Santa Cruz Planning Commission unanimously approved the several permits that would allow for construction of a 33,000 square-foot arena to be built on the current parking lot.
The building, to be named Kaiser-Permanente Arena, would house about 3,000 people for Warriors games.
One letter, available on the city council’s website, lists 45 conditions that must be agreed upon before approval. Among the conditions:
• Events must be done and spectators out of the arena by 10 p.m., although workers can stay to clean up the arena.
• No smoking allowed in or near the arena. The announcers must mention this to spectators at least once and 15 minutes before each game.
• The Warriors or whoever is using the arena for an event must have a valid license to sell alcohol. Alcohol cannot be brought into the arena. Patrons can’t purchase more than two alcoholic beverages at a time, and alcohol sales stop at the end of the third quarter.
• No coolers, large bags or backpacks are allowed in the arena.
• Construction of the arena takes place 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. during weekends.
The council must give the permits a final approval before construction can begin.
