WATSONVILLE — When Matt Wright hit the ball, it sounded like it was gone for a home run. It even looked like it was heading out past the centerfield wall.
It indeed went over the wall.
Maverick Kressman brought it back, though.
Kressman made a leaping catch at the fence to rob Wright of a home run and preserve what was eventually a shutout by the Santa Cruz PONY All-Star baseball team.
Santa Cruz blanked Monterey 14-0 Wednesday at Franich Field to advance to the Northern California Coast Region’s section championship on Friday.
The boys in red will face either Carmel or Toro, which play today at 5 p.m. at Franich Field.
