SANTA CRUZ — With two runners on in the second inning, Arturo Infante hit a single to right field and started running.
The Watsonville American Yankees outfielder then saw the ball get booted to the wall, and he kept on running.
Eyeing third base, he channeled his inner Fox McCloud and did a form of a barrel roll as he reached the corner bag safely.
It was one of a few memorable and happy moments in the Yankees’ 18-0 win against the San Juan-Aromas Giants on Monday at Harvey West Park.
“I was happy after the hit,” Infante said. “It was a single, and then it kept going. Now, it was more than a single. Coach told me to go to third, and I just went in and slid.”
A day after the Yankees lost their opener in the Little League District 39 majors Tournament of Champions, the boys in blue proved they weren’t going to go down quietly.
The Yankees will try to do what few teams in any sport have ever done, win a double elimination tournament after losing their first game.
The Yankees pounded out 15 hits and led from the very beginning.
