The Aptos High baseball players trotted out to left field and got on one knee in a huddle. It was quiet for a moment, and then they started clapping and yelling joyfully.
It’s something they’ve done a lot this year. This latest huddle took place Thursday at San Jose Municipal Stadium, a rare destination for the Mariners.
In the middle of the huddle was Dave Heinevetter, praising his team on another important win this season. The Mariners coach watched his team storm out to a big lead only to lose it and grab it back.
Today, Heinevetter will lead Aptos into its third Central Coast Section championship match in school history. And he’ll continue to preach the one word that he’s said so many times this season: composure.
“If you play the game right, good things will happen,” Heinevetter said.
