APTOS — The Mariners didn’t want to be ‘that team.’
About 24 hours after a couple of notable baseball teams were eliminated in the Central Coast Section tournament, Aptos High staved off a thirsty-for-an-upset Soledad squad 16-4 Thursday in the first round of the Division II tournament.
With the win, Aptos faces Gunn of Palo Alto on Saturday at Hartnell College in Salinas.
The Mariners seemed to approach the game like a boxer, striking early and wearing down the visitors with jabs.
The Mariners never trailed and used a three-run third inning to take a 4-0 advantage.
The big strike came in the bottom of the sixth inning when 15 batters went to the plate and the Mariners grabbed nine runs.
Aptos got some help as Soledad, in the tournament for the third consecutive year, committed five errors. Of the 16 runs, only six were earned.
Six Mariners had at least two RBIs.
