APTOS — It was a calm return to the home area for Ben Jacques-Maynes.

The Watsonville native is in sixth place overall after Stage 2 of the Tour of California, which concluded at Cabrillo College.

“I’m happy the tour is back,” said Jacques-Maynes. “The community was motivated to bring it back. Hopefully it’s going on without a hitch.”

Santa Cruz County was a part of the 2009 and 2010 Tour of California races. Anschutz Entertainment Group opted to go somewhere else last year.

With the nation’s biggest cycling event back in the county this year, Jacques-Maynes showed he had vast knowledge of the region, staying with the top field throughout and finishing fifth in Stage 2 by a couple of seconds.

He said he appreciated the amount of support from the local fans who watched him and the other cyclists go by.
