FELTON — It was another banner day for Aptos’ Nikki Hiltz as she won two Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League championships on Saturday at San Lorenzo Valley High School.
Hiltz became a three-time league champion in the girls 800-meter run. She also dominated in the girls 1,600-meter run.
She’ll be heading up to San Jose in a couple of weeks to compete in the Central Coast Section championship meet. She won’t be alone.
A host of other local student-athletes won their events to reach the next level.
Aptos’ Riggs Powell won the boys 400-meter run with a time of 50.69 seconds, winning by 0.06 seconds over Soquel’s Isaac Gettleman. Both runners qualified for CCS.
In the 110-meter hurdles, Aptos’ Antonio Andrade prevailed with a time of 16.6 seconds.
Another Mariner, Nikki Miyashita, soared 5 feet, 2 inches on her final attempt to win the girls high jump championship.
Aaron McAnerney of Aptos cleared 14 feet in the boys pole vault to win the league title. He went for 14 feet, 6 inches, which would have been a school record, but the junior vaulter clipped the pole.
Aptos finished first through fifth in the boys discus, with Alex Yerena tossing the disc 145 feet, 2 inches to win the event.
