SALINAS — A rush of adrenaline seemed to go through April Chau as she made one final sprint toward the finish line in the girls 1,600-meter race Saturday at the Alisal High Invitational.

After catching her breath, she was overcome with joy after being told she possibly broke the school record.

At the very least, her time of 5 minutes, 34.28 seconds was her best this year by nearly 15 seconds.

Chau ended up second in the race but was all smiles afterward.

Other local student-athletes shined on the Alisal track.

Aptos' throwers went 1-2-3 in the boys discus, as many competitors took advantage of a tailwind to post new personal bests.

Alex Yerena won the event with a throw of 143 feet, 1.5 inches. Dustin Samms was second at 139 feet, and Elijah Marta was right behind at 131 feet, 1 inch.

Watsonville's Brianna Cueva posted a new personal best in the girls discus, throwing 135 feet, 5.5 inches. Her mark, which came on the final throw of the day, moved her to second best in the Central Coast Section and tops in the four-league region. The throw was also a meet record.

Watsonville's Raymond Silver also set a meet record, leaping 6 feet, 2.25 inches in the boys high jump to win the event. He moved to seventh-best in the CCS with the jump.

Watsonville's Lamar Cowans was a double winner, claiming first in the 100-meter run (11.05 seconds) and the 200-meter run (23.29 seconds).

The time in the 100-meter run is tied for seventh-best in the CCS.

North Monterey County's Jennifer Casas claimed first in the girls shot put with a heave of 33 feet, 8.5 inches.
