Carmona prevails in Long Beach

Posted: Tuesday, Apr 10th, 2012

Watsonville High’s Maraya Carmona (left) and Patterson’s Jasmine Mendoza, both members of the Scorpions Wrestling Club, show their medals after winning their divisions Saturday at the Mexican-American Games on Saturday in Long Beach.

WATSONVILLE — Maraya Carmona has been a busy wrestler since placing second in the Central Coast Section girls wrestling tournament two months ago.

If things go her way, she could stay busy for a few more weeks.

Carmona took first place in her division at the Mexican-American Games 2012 wrestling tournament on Saturday at the Long Beach Convention Center in downtown Long Beach.

The Watsonville High sophomore competed in three matches in the 56-kilogram (123.5 pounds) division.

“They were really tough matches,” Carmona said. “The girls were really strong. I had to focus on the match and not think about anything else but winning.”

The Mexican-American Games was a weeklong event with competitions in boxing, wrestling, soccer and tae kwon do. Only Latino athletes or those with direct Latino descent are allowed to compete.

Saturday’s tournament was a freestyle wrestling competition, which is different than what she experienced this past winter while competing for Watsonville High.
