WATSONVILLE A suspect that police believe shot a 30-year-old man June 3 in Watsonville was still on the lam Friday despite intensive efforts to corral him.

Ramiro Castillo, 26, is suspected of shooting a man in the back in front of a Marchant Street home. Within hours police spotted Castillo, whom they suspected was the triggerman, in front of a home on the 100 block of West Beach Street. They moved in and rounded him up.

Police did not have enough evidence to keep him in custody, said detective Charles Bailey, so he was released.

However, over the next week evidence started to mount against Castillo. On Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. about 30 police officers, including SWAT team members from Santa Clara and Santa Cruz, descended on the same West Beach Street home where they believed Castillo had holed up.
