WATSONVILLE A 77-year-old Capitola man was trapped in his caved-in pickup for 95 minutes Tuesday after he drove off of Highway 152 and slammed into a stand of redwood trees. The 1:34 p.m. collision caved in the front of the truck and shoved the engine compartment and steering wheel into the driver.

Adding to the predicament, the newer model Chevy Silverado ended up perched on its side on a steep hill of loose dirt making it extremely difficult to approach and work on.

Cal Fire Battalion Chief Jake Hess said the extrication was the longest such operation of his career.
