LAS LOMAS — Under the shade of a giant solar array Tuesday, three students at Hall District Elementary School flipped a switch and ushered in an era in which the school will cut nearly 75 percent of its energy usage.

The solar project is one of six that will eventually save Pajaro Valley Unified School District an estimated $1 million annually at Watsonville, Aptos and Pajaro Valley high schools and Rolling Hills Middle School. A solar project at Bradley Elementary School is already up and running.

Hall District’s project, which cost approximately $680,000, is positioned atop a shade structure in the school’s parking lot, was paid for by Measure L funds, the $150 million bond measure approved in 2012 that is funding hundreds of repair, maintenance and construction projects throughout the district.
