WATSONVILLE — City leaders welcomed Salvador Sánchez Cerén, the vice president of El Salvador, during a ceremony Saturday as Watsonville celebrated becoming a sister city with San Pedro Masahuat.

The mayor of the city, Carlos Alberto Ramos Rodriguez, was also welcomed.

With Watsonville becoming a sister city with San Pedro Masahuat, Assemblyman Luis Alejo said the ties between the two cities would help improve relations between California and El Salvador.

“We hope today will continue to strengthen the bond with California and El Salvador,” he said.

Cerén agreed with Alejo, and thanked Watsonville for the “warm welcome.”

“We are looking forward to continuing this and working together,” he said through a translator.
