WATSONVILLE — Students interested in water treatment will now flow into Watsonville after the City Council agreed Tuesday to partner with UC Santa Cruz to establish a WaterLab facility within the city.
The facility will be located at the Water Resources Center on 500 Clearwater Lane.
According to Brent Haddad, an environmental studies professor at UCSC, WaterLab is a teaching and research laboratory that is "student built and operated." Through hands-on activities and designing models, students learn careers in the water treatment field, he said.
"We'd like the students to be experts in water treatment, that's why we're building this facility," Haddad said.
Haddad said he got the idea for WaterLab in 2007 when he toured a pilot desalination facility in Santa Cruz.
In 2009, he met Kevin Silviera, Watsonville's wastewater division manager, and the two began discussing bringing the research center within the city.
