WATSONVILLE — Volunteers marked out parcels and put in a drip-irrigation system at Watsonville’s newest community garden at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds on Saturday.

The half-acre plot, located at the eastern end of the fairgrounds, will accommodate approximately 30 families who want to grow their own fruits, vegetables and herbs in individual 12-by-15-feet allotments.

The project is a collaboration between Mesa Verde Gardens, the Agricultural History Project and the fairgrounds, which has donated the use of the land.

Members of the Agricultural History Project tilled and prepared the soil in preparation for Saturday’s event.

The land was previously a vacant lot.
