Ainsworth found with weapon, escape plan

SANTA CRUZ — The Santa Cruz man who went on a violent rampage in December 2010 after escaping from a Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputy is in trouble again, this time for having a weapon in his jail cell and a written plan to use it on a corrections officer and escape.

Maurice Ainsworth, 26, has been in Santa Cruz County Jail since 2009, when he was arrested for a home invasion burglary in the Santa Cruz Mountains. He escaped from the sheriff’s deputy during a medical visit while awaiting trial for those charges.

After Santa Cruz County Assistant District Attorney Celia Rowland combined the two cases, Ainsworth was convicted in January of 39 counts that include kidnapping, home invasion robbery, burglary, auto theft, assaulting a peace officer, attempted murder and false imprisonment.

The shank was found Wednesday as Ainsworth awaited a March 29 sentencing hearing.

Rowland said she does not plan to charge Ainsworth for the weapon.

“We will not be filing the new case because the defendant just needs to go to prison,” she said.

She does, however, plan to assure Ainsworth will have to serve 100 percent of his eventual sentence. Some convicts are eligible to be released after serving 85 percent.

“We will be using this incident among others to justify why the court should take his good time credits away,” Rowland said.

Ainsworth’s sentencing was moved to April 26 at 1:30 p.m. in a hearing Thursday. He was not transported to court because he is considered an extreme danger, Rowland said.
