'High-ranking' gang member convicted of jailhouse assault

Posted: Tuesday, Feb 19th, 2013

SANTA CRUZ — A Watsonville man is facing more than 24 years in prison after he was convicted Tuesday of numerous gang and assault charges, Santa Cruz County District Attorney Bob Lee announced.

Albert “Doughboy” Martinez, 37, was convicted by a jury of being an active participant in a criminal street gang, possession of a weapon in jail and assault with a deadly weapon. The jury also determined that the crimes were committed for the benefit of a criminal street gang.

Prosecutors say Martinez and Jesse Ybarra, both known high-ranking gang members, attacked a fellow inmate in Santa Cruz County Jail on Aug. 8, 2011.

The inmate suffered minor injuries as a result of the attack and has since made a full recovery.

Martinez will be required to serve 80 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole. He is due back in court on Feb. 27. A sentencing date has not been set.

Ybarra was sentenced to 10 years in state prison for his involvement in the attack on Dec. 21.
