WATSONVILLE City Councilwoman Nancy Bilicich and Greg Caput were appointed on Jan. 29 to the Flood Control and Water Conservation District Zone 7, the board that oversees the decisions made about the levee.
The appointments mark the first time South County is totally represented levee issues, which Bilicich said is vital for the area.
Its a big deal, Bilicich said. It has to do with our South County levee.
Among other duties, Bilicich said the board is tasked with overseeing projects such as the bench excavation project, which involves the removal of sediment along the Pajaro River to increase the flow of water and reduce the likelihood of flooding.
With most of the river flowing through South County, much of the population would be impacted by disasters such as floods, said Santa Cruz County Supervisor Greg Caput.
