SANTA CRUZ — The fight against cancer got a major advance Thursday thanks to a $1 million gift from Mary Corrigan Solari to the new Mary and Richard Solari Cancer Research Center at Dominican Hospital. The pledge makes Solari of Aptos Dominican’s single largest donor.

Solari was acknowledged Thursday at a noon ceremony inside the new center that is still under construction at 3150 Mission Dr.

Chuck Maffia, president of the Dominican Hospital Foundation Board, Sister Rita Dean, vice president of Mission Integration, Dr. Nanette Mickiewicz, president of Dominican Hospital, Dr. Michael Alexander, medical director of the Mary and Richard Solari Cancer Center, and Mary Solari were the speakers at the event that featured a catered lunch.

“My father died in Dominican Hospital due to cancer in 1975, and my husband, Dick, died of acute leukemia at Dominican Hospital in 2008,” Solari said. “I gave my first gift to Dominican in 1975 in gratitude for the care my father received at Dominican, especially from the Adrian Sisters. I can still remember exactly how I felt at the time.”

Mary and Dick Solari have provided key support in the past years to the emergency department, pediatrics, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Cardiac Center. The new cancer center will serve as an outpatient facility designed to corral Dominican’s cancer programs under one roof.
