Woman impersonates doctor at Dominican Hospital, steals from nurses

Posted: Thursday, Jan 3rd, 2013

A woman posing as a doctor at Dominican Hospital Wednesday afternoon gained access to a staff area and stole credit cards from four nurses, Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Deputy April Skalland said Thursday.

According to Skalland, the woman was wearing a lab coat and a stethoscope around her neck when she entered a staff area in the neonatal care unit of the hospital approximately 12:30 p.m.

The woman spent “thousands” of dollars before the nurses discovered the theft, Skalland said.

Detectives are investigating the incident, which includes looking at video surveillance footage from the hospital, Skalland said.

They are also working with police in Capitola, where the woman used the credit cards, Skalland said.

Dominican Hospital Mike Lee said the hospital is cooperating with the investigation.

“We are committed to providing a safe environment and are reviewing the incident and related hospital security policies,” he stated in an email. “The safety and security of our patients and staff are our highest priorities.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division at 454-2311, or the anonymous tip line at 454-2847.
