Modified: Tuesday, Dec 11th, 2012

Juan Jeronimo.

WATSONVILLE The teen who was killed when the vehicle he was in smashed into a tree Sunday night has been identified as Juan Jeronimo, 17.

The vehicle, a white 1998 Honda Civic, was traveling east on Green Valley Road approximately 8:46 p.m. when the driver veered to the left for unknown reasons, rolled over and hit the sidewalk just east of Magnolia Drive and then cartwheeled and crashed into a sycamore tree standing in a deep ravine.

Jeronimo was reportedly sitting in the back seat and may not have been wearing a seatbelt.

The driver and the other passenger were taken to Bay Area hospitals for non-life threatening injuries. Their names were not released.

Jeronimo attended Watsonville and Renaissance high schools.

After that he was enrolled through the Santa Cruz County Office of Education through Juvenile Hall, which he left in April.

According to his Facebook page, he was living in South Lake Tahoe at the time of the crash.

It was unclear Monday whether he was still attending school.

The Watsonville Police Department Traffic Bureau is still investigating the crash. Police are still unsure if alcohol or drugs played a role.

Anyone with information is asked to call Traffic Officer Ely Uretsky at 768-3000 extension 5355, Investigations at 768-3350 or the Crime Tip line at 768-3544.
