CAPITOLA — Chris Splees didn’t waste time getting his Christmas trees onto his lot Friday. The day after Thanksgiving he and a crew of workers unloaded 130,000 pounds of top ranked No. 1 Noble fir trees at Capitola Produce.

Workers were busy by 10 a.m. drilling holes, attaching stands and unwrapping the trees from their protective netting.

“I’ve done this for the past 18 years,” Splees, owner of Capitola Produce, said. “You can’t mess around. It’s a lot of work. We’ll have these things ready for sale by 2 p.m.”

Splees said the big rig load arrived Friday morning from Monroe, Oregon.

“There are about 420 trees on this load but by the time it’s all over, we’ll sell 1,100 trees,” he said. “There are more loads on the way.”

The lot, at the corner of Bay and Capitola avenues (look for the classic rusted flatbed truck), will feature everything from tabletop to 8-foot trees.

“I don’t sell wreaths any more — just trees,” Splees said. “People get wreaths at Costco for, like, $8 and they’re really nice. I just stick with the trees.”

As the morning sun warmed the region the scent of pine wafted over the heavily travelled intersection.

“I love the smell,” intoned one older woman as she inched past with the aid of a walker.

Splees said he will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. everyday day.

“Usually by the 16th of December these things are all gone,” Splees said. “They’re high quality, attractive trees.”

Meanwhile, in Watsonville, another big rig unloaded 160 Noble and Douglas fir trees at FoodMaxx for their outdoor tree lot.

Worker Marcus Trujillo said the trees were also from Oregon. The lot features a variety of tree sizes which go on sale today.
