WATSONVILLE — A Watsonville man was taken into custody Friday on suspicion of auto theft and brandishing a knife, police said.

The incident began when a man hopped into a gold Mercedes Benz 300 SD Turbo Diesel that was warming up in the driveway of an Airport Road home at 9:50 a.m. Master Officer Eddie Santana said the owner of the car had briefly stepped inside the home when Matthew Colon allegedly jumped into the 1986 sedan and sped off, but not before the car’s owner got a glimpse of Colon.

About an hour later police got a call from a law firm on the 200 block of Westgate Drive after a confused man who suddenly showed up inside their business and began rambling nonsense. At one point the man, who later turned out to be Colon, brandished a knife and told one woman that she’d better run, Santana said.

When police arrived about 5 minutes later, they spotted the stolen Mercedes that had been parked haphazardly, with one wheel on up on a curb, in the law firm’s parking lot. After interviewing the victims police searched around the building and located Colon at the rear of the complex drying some cloths on some bushes in the sun.
