APTOS With "Preparing for Evanescence" at the Cabrillo College Gallery, artist Jody Alexander is inviting the public into the home of a person who is gradually disappearing.

For the exhibit, which runs through Dec. 7, Alexander said she wanted to "make a fully realized home." Among those that give the exhibit a homey feel are a table with chairs located near the center of the space, picture frames hanging on the wall and a sewing machine against another wall.

The media of the work varies, from wooden boxes to upholstery, and everything that is stitched was done by hand.

Many found objects that Alexander altered, such as spoons and paintings, are featured as well.

The term "evanescence" in the title of the exhibit means a gradual disappearance, Alexander said, and the character who lives in this "home" is in this situation.

"I always have told stories in my artwork," she said.

While this person is disappearing, Alexander said, they are not necessarily meeting their death.

"I invite people to interpret that," she said.
