WATSONVILLE — Nob Hill Foods in Watsonville Square on Main Street was empty save for a solitary customer on Monday afternoon after workers went on strike Sunday, joining fellow union employees at Nob Hill and Raley’s stores across Northern and Central California.

A single checker could be seen at the counter, and Nob Hill Foods Assistant Store Director Terry Kirihara said they were “trying to operate as normal.”

The leaders of UFCW 8-Golden State and UFCW Local 5 called for a strike after contract negotiations with the company, in the presence of Federal Mediator Greg Lim, fell through.

Approximately 7,000 union members are affected. This strike is the first in Raley’s 77-year history.

In spite of a scorching afternoon sun Monday, strikers were in high spirits as they waved placards at passing motorists along Main Street and stood in front of the store’s main entrance, asking potential customers to honor the picket line and shop elsewhere, even handing out a flyer with alternative union grocery stores, including Safeway, Food Maxx and Fairway.

A table with provisions and bottled water was set up in the parking lot to accommodate the more than 20 picketers, including an employee from the Scotts Valley Nob Hill Foods store and two regular Nob Hill Foods customers who passed out flyers in support of the striking workers.

“We support the workers who work at this store,” said customer Dan Strong, who was in the store parking lot handing out flyers with fellow customer Stanton Kniffin.
