Planners return music privileges to El Miramar

Posted: Thursday, Oct 4th, 2012

WATSONVILLE — Live music is once again allowed at El Miramar Sports Bar and Restaurant, although the business’ management skills were questioned Tuesday night at the Watsonville Planning Commission meeting.

Approved unanimously, El Miramar can now entertain guests with karaoke and DJ music until 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and mariachis until 8 p.m. the same days, four months after these privileges were revoked by the Planning Commission due to many reported violations.

After the fatal stabbing of Brandon Gil in March outside El Miramar, Watsonville Police looked into the operations of the business, and reportedly discovered two incidents of minors drinking in the bar, a DJ playing amplified music on several locations and no exterior security cameras installed in the rear of the business.

Since the June 5 decision, no complaints have been received from the neighbors, and the Watsonville Police Department reported no incidents at the restaurant, according to city staff.

But it was the lack of staffing at El Miramar that caused the commission to question Garcia’s ability to run a successful restaurant.

According to commissioner Trina Coffman-Gomez, on Thursday around 1 p.m., the lights were off in the restaurant, and no one was in the kitchen. The only room that had activity, she said, was the billiard room.
