WATSONVILLE — Mi Pueblo Foods awarded 27 students from Watsonville, Salinas and Monterey more than $286,000 in scholarships during a ceremony Tuesday night in Watsonville.
The Mi Pueblo Scholarship program raised the funds by asking customers and vendors to donate money towards the program at every one of the company's 21 locations.
Over the years, the program raised more and more funds: In 2009, $65,000 was raised; 2010 saw it double to $128,000, and last year, more than $270,000 was raised.
"We've doubled it, tripled it, and we've continued to invest in this program," said Perla Rodriguez, Mi Pueblo's vice president of public affairs.
