WATSONVILLE — Rosa De Ramirez received a certificate of recognition and peace award Tuesday from the office of Assemblyman Luis Alejo.
De Ramirez, a Watsonville resident, lost her son Tony Valdivia at 19 in 1994, and she was honored for leading the Annual Watsonville Peace & Unity March to help end gang and violence and to keep the memory alive of all those who lost their lives to violence.
This year is the 18th year of that march, which was founded by Alejo in 1994. De Ramirez continues to work closely with other mothers who have lost their children to violence and organized a Mother Day Peace Walk a few years ago. She has also helped organize numerous peace vigils and has been an outspoken and leading voice on having a more peaceful community.
