WATSONVILLE — A 21-year-old man was stabbed multiple times on the Pajaro River levee near Marchant Street Wednesday evening in a suspected gang skirmish.
The victim was transported by air ambulance to a Bay Area trauma center for further treatment. He suffered life-threatening wounds and was listed in critical condition Wednesday night, according to a statement from Watsonville Police Master Officer Bill Barret.
Police investigation at the scene revealed that a large group of subjects approached two rival gang members and a fight ensued with weapons. During the fight, the victim received the injuries to his head, Barret stated.
Another man with blood on his tank top was handcuffed and detained by officers near the corner of Marchant and Dawson streets.
Master Officer Jess Ojeda said the man was being questioned. The young man was intoxicated and was being uncooperative, Ojeda said. He said the handcuffed man had been involved in the fight.
The stabbing occurred at about 6:13 p.m. Anyone with information regarding the fight is encouraged to contact the WPD Investigations Division at 768-3350 or the Crime Tip Line at 768-3544.
