WATSONVILLE — Karina Cervantez, a Watsonville planning commissioner and the fiance of State Assemblyman Luis Alejo, declared her candidacy Wednesday for the Watsonville City Council.
She's seeking the District 2 seat, which covers eastern Watsonville, and has already received endorsements from current District 2 City Councilmember Oscar Rios, State Assemblyman Bill Monning and Alejo.
Cervantez would be only the second Latina to ever serve on the City Council if she wins her race on Nov. 6. The first was former Watsonville Mayor Ana Ventura Phares. The only female on the current council is Nancy Bilicich, who represents District 7.
