WATSONVILLE — While gassing up his car Friday morning, Capitola resident Mark Harris said he was dreading his daily commute to Watsonville, a trip down southbound Highway 1 that he describes as “driving over a cheese grater.”
“It’s terrible,” he said. “I can’t imagine what it does to my tires.”
Harris is one of thousands who travel the 20-mile stretch of Highway 1 every day and who are encountering two construction projects that often snarl traffic and slow commuters.
Harris was referring to the rough stretches of road between Watsonville and Santa Cruz, which is lined with stretches of road that make driving difficult.
