WATSONVILLE — Joseph Myers, who served as a code breaker during World War II and has been a Watsonville resident since 1946, will be honored today at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey.
The event honoring Myers — the Battle of the Midway 70th Anniversary Memorial Dinner — will simultaneously commemorate the 70th anniversary of the battle and honor those who helped decipher the code used by the Japanese military and helped determine enemy troop movements.
“This is about honoring the intelligence community and how it helped win the battle,” Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Ken Johnson said.
Retired U.S. Navy Admiral Gary Roughhead, who among other things led the Navy’s early efforts to use information technology and social media in the military, will be the keynote speaker, and Joe Rochefort, the cryptologist who was instrumental in breaking the Japanese code will also be honored posthumously at the event.
