WATSONVILLE — Hundreds of middle-school test takers, along with many local officials, packed the Lakeview Middle School gym this morning as the state testing season made its annual return.

It’s the 6th year the school has done a big kickoff event to boost participation in the battery of California Standards Tests, or CSTs, which have been known to strike dread in the heart of many a student.

“If we can convince these guys to try, then they’ll do fine,” said Lakeview Middle School Principal Ken Woods.

Before the testing started, the most popular table in the crowded gym was that of Watsonville boxer Carina Moreno. The four-time world champion was all smiles as students pressed in to see her championship belts and to get her autograph.

Local luminaries at the event included Watsonville Mayor Eduardo Montesino, Police Chief Manny Solano and many members of the City Council and board of supervisors.
