WATSONVILLE — Zach Friend, who is running for the county's second district supervisor seat, said he has spent the past two months talking to his potential constituents, asking them about the things that are important to them.
Instead of the complex, hard-to-solve issues he expected, Friend said they overwhelmingly discussed issues such as worn-out roads and a lack of Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputies patrolling the unincorporated areas of the county.
“These are issues that can be overcome,” Friend said during a meeting with the Register-Pajaronian editorial board Thursday.
Friend currently works for the Santa Cruz Police Department, where he manages a $23 million budget as the crime analyst and public information officer. He designed the department’s predictive policing program that garnered national media attention.
