Both the Majors and Minors Tournament of Champions were affected by the Trabing Fire Friday, but while the Majors games were simply delayed to allow teams to beat the re-routed traffic on Highway 1, the Minors bracket fell into disarray.
The Majors games are all being played at Harvey West Park in Santa Cruz, where the Watsonville American Yankees beat the Scotts Valley Braves 10-9 in the first of two elimination games. Aptos eliminated San Juan/Aromas 6-5 in the nightcap.
Watsonville American advances to face Live Oak today at 10 a.m. — another elimination game. Scotts Valley was eliminated from the tournament with the loss. Aptos plays Santa Cruz National at 1 p.m. in today’s second matchup.
Neither of the Minors tournament games were played Friday, though Santa Cruz American forfeited its game to Live Oak because it couldn’t field enough players. Friday’s other game, between Santa Cruz National and Watsonville National/Salsipuedes was rescheduled for Monday at 6 p.m. The winner of that game will play against Live Oak Tuesday at 6 p.m.
The starting time for each of today’s four games have been adjusted to avoid playing in the afternoon heat. Gilroy American plays San Juan/Aromas at 9 a.m. on field 1, while Gilroy National plays Scotts Valley at 9 a.m. on field 2. Both losers-bracket games — Watsonville American vs. SLV and Aptos vs. Capitola/Soquel — will be played at 11 a.m.
